DAY 3: LIMA - MALDONADO - SPY THE MOST AMAZING WILDLIFE

Our representative will pick you up from the hotel to take you to the airport, where he will assist you with check-in procedures for your domestic flight to Puerto Maldonado. Arrive in Puerto Maldonado, capital of Madre de Dios, and join a 1-hour bus and 1-hour boat journey to the lodge. Your first taste of the Amazon culinary will be in the river while you let the city behind to enjoy the amazing jungle landscapes.
Refugio Amazonas awaits– a spacious ecolodge, with a bar, a massage center, and buffet service with the Tambopata National Reserve behind it. This eco-lodge is home to Wired Amazon, the first citizen science project which turns explorers into citizen scientists.

We are building a Big Grid to answer Big Questions. Become a researcher and explore the world of camera traps and the amazing wildlife they reveal’ it’s a Big Neighborhood.

Jaguar

We will help researchers collect the data from the camera traps and install some new ones! We will try them and make sure they are working correctly, and on the way back to the lodge, will get to see what we got on the cameras!. The light glares against the sheet, highlighting its white color against the dark jungle night. As the bright light flickers, moths begin to flutter towards it. You study them carefully, noting their shapes and patterns. By the end of the night, you might have discovered a new species unknown to science. Now, you get to name it yourself! (B,L,D)

DAY 4: DISCOVER THE OXBOW LAKE

You might paddle around Condenado oxbow lake on a canoe, looking for lakeside wildlife such as hoatzin, caiman, and horned screamers, hoping to see the otters which are infrequently seen here. You will also be rewarded with overhead sightings of macaws.

Giant Otters

Connect your kids with nature, join this great scavenger hunt and look for the Shahijani (Agouti) Treasure! Your guide will take you through different trails to look for seeds, like the brazil nut or palm trees, previously hidden. These seeds have been prepared and are ready to build bracelets and necklaces. Continue the discovery trail and you will reach the great Ceiba tree where the treasure is hidden and get ready to receive the sacred message from the Masters of the Forest. Our guides are trained to explain and engage with kids on a level they learn and also have fun!
Getting tattooed in the Rainforest? No worries, we´ll prepare a paste from a fruit called “Huito”, and achiote or other natural dies to draw tattoos on ourselves. We can draw different shapes of animals or other patterns associated with the forest. They only last a few days.

Amazon Sunset

Sunsets in the jungle are one of nature’s most beautiful spectacles, and one of the best places to enjoy them is from a boat on the Tambopata River. In the afternoon, your guide will take you to a boat for an easy-going, two-hour ride on the Tambopata. Your guide will talk about the dynamics of this Amazonian river as you watch for rainforest wildlife and see macaws fly overhead before enjoying the jungle sunset. (B,L,D)

DAY 5: JOIN A PARTY FULL OF COLORS & SOUNDS

Two hours from the lodge, deep in the Tambopata National Reserve you will stop at the Chuncho clay lick. After a brief walk (~5 minutes) you will have the chance to see dozens of large macaws feeding on the special sodium-rich clays of the riverbank. The Chuncho clay lick probably attracts more large macaws than any other clay lick in the world and the sight of dozens of macaws taking flight is truly unforgettable.

Macaw Clay Lick

The details of our stopover will depend on the weather and the amount of macaw activity, as the birds don’t visit the clay lick when it is raining.

Why point to the stars when you can reach the canopy! Experience the incredible diversity of Amazon Trees and Plants from the Air! Throw a Drone from a 35-meter-tall scaffolding tower and get an incomparable view of the canopy, feel like a star! This canopy tower experience is a quick 20-minute walk from the lodge and provides access to the tops of huge rainforest trees. We will get the chance to observe the researchers programming the drones for their daily route, and we will get unique and amazing pictures and videos of the canopy from the air!
From ancient times the wisdom of the forest has been inherited by the Ese’ejas on these lands, they used to live completely apart from the rest of the world and everything they learned came from observing the interactions of every single habitat in the wilderness.

Cusco City

We’ll gather around a circle of fire and hear from themselves some of the most magic histories explaining how simple is their lifestyle and how connected we’re to the forest Ese’eja legends and a warm moment to connect even further with nature, the gift of nature is ideal to connect our kids thru stories from the forest. (B,L,D)
