OVERVIEW:
Waqrapukara is a lesser known Inca fortress that is gaining popularity as a hidden treasure among travellers looking for an off the beaten track hiking adventure. This impressive Inca archaeological complex is remotely located in the acomayo area and offers amazing views of Andean landscapes, llamas, alpacas, lakes and the Apurimac Canyon!
DETAILED ITINERARY:
We will pick you up from your hotel in the historic center of Cusco at 4 am. If you did not sleep in the historic center, we will set up a pick up point. We will have a car ride south towards Sangarara, a typical village near Waqrapukara. On the way we will stop for photos at the Pomacanchi lagoon which has tranquil bluish green waters. After breakfast at Sangarara we will continue to Rinconada community from where we will start our hike ( 5 miles - 8 kms) At Waqrapukara, you will have a guided tour of Intipunku (sun gate), the main square, the towers, andenería, Wiracocha enclosure etc. After the guided tour you will have free time to explore the site and take lots of pictures, later you will start an easier downhill hike to huayqui town (4.3 miles - 7 km) where we will have lunch before continuing our return journey to Cusco.
