OVERVIEW:
Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain Tour – The New, Shortest & Easiest Rainbow Mountain Experience
Discover the stunning Palcoyo Rainbow Mountains, the best alternative to the classic Rainbow Mountain trek. This unique full-day adventure takes you to a spectacular area featuring three colorful Rainbow Mountains, breathtaking Andean landscapes, and panoramic views of the majestic Ausangate Mountain (6,385 m / 20,945 ft.), the highest peak in the Cusco region.
Unlike the more challenging Rainbow Mountain hike, Palcoyo offers a shorter, easier, and less crowded experience, making it perfect for travelers who want to enjoy the beauty of the Andes without a strenuous trek.
Along the way, you'll pass through traditional Andean villages with charming adobe and stone houses, encounter herds of llamas and alpacas grazing in the highlands, and admire some of the most spectacular scenery in Peru. The area is rich in natural beauty, colorful mountain formations, and authentic local culture, making it one of Cusco's best off-the-beaten-path destinations.

Palcoyo Rainbow Mountains – Full Day Tour Itinerary
Important: Due to the high elevation, all participants should be well acclimatized to the altitude before joining this tour.
Your adventure begins with an early hotel pickup in Cusco at approximately 5:00 AM. We will travel south through the scenic Andean countryside to the town of Cusipata, a journey of about 2 hours. Here, you will have time to use the restrooms and enjoy breakfast before continuing the drive.
After breakfast, we will travel for approximately 1.5 more hours to the starting point of the spectacular Palcoyo 3 Rainbow Mountains Trek. Along the way, you'll enjoy breathtaking views of the Andes, traditional villages, herds of llamas and alpacas, colorful red mountains, and stunning rural landscapes.
The hike begins at an elevation of approximately 4,800 m (15,840 ft). The trail is relatively short and gentle compared to the classic Rainbow Mountain trek. The walk to the highest viewpoint, located at 4,955 m (16,352 ft), takes about 1 hour.
At the summit, you will discover the impressive Stone Forest, a unique natural formation surrounded by panoramic views of the three Rainbow Mountains, the snow-capped peaks of the Vilcanota Range, and the majestic Ausangate Mountain, the highest peak in the Cusco region.
After spending time enjoying the scenery and taking photos, we will continue along a narrow and moderately steep trail for approximately 20 minutes to get closer to the other colorful mountains in the area. Depending on weather conditions and the group's pace, there will be time to explore and admire this remarkable landscape.
We will then hike back downhill to the trailhead, a walk of approximately 30 minutes, before boarding our private transportation for the return journey to Cusco.
Arrival in Cusco and hotel drop-off is expected between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM.
Important Notes
- Alternative shorter and easier walking routes are available for travelers who may experience difficulty due to the altitude.
- The itinerary and timing may vary depending on weather, road conditions, trail conditions, and the guide's recommendations.
- We strongly recommend spending at least 2–3 days in Cusco before the tour to properly acclimatize.
